According to Avolio, B. & Kahai, S. (2003a), “leadership mediated by technology can exhibit exactly the same content and style as traditional face-to-face leadership.” They also believe that the leader’s ability to function effectively in this environment depends on the infrastructure supporting the workplace (Avolio, B. & Kahai, S. (2003b)).  Effective virtual leadership is not that different than in-person, what changes is how you do it.

Recognized e-leadership styles

Here are some commonly recognized e-leadership styles:

  • Transformational leadership: involves motivating and inspiring teams to work towards a common goal, often through a shared vision and purpose.
  • Transactional leadership: focuses on setting clear goals, providing rewards and punishments based on performance, and monitoring progress towards those goals.
  • Charismatic leadership: emphasizes the leader’s personal qualities and ability to inspire and influence others through their charisma and personality.
  • Servant leadership: emphasizes the leader’s role in serving the needs of their followers, empowering them, and enabling their success.
  • Authentic leadership: involves leading with integrity, transparency, and self-awareness, and building relationships based on trust and respect.
  • Laissez-faire leadership: involves giving teams a high degree of autonomy and independence, with minimal guidance or direction from the leader.
  • Situational leadership: involves adapting one’s leadership style to match the specific needs and circumstances of a given situation or team.
  • Adaptive leadership: involves constantly adapting and evolving one’s leadership style in response to changing circumstances, challenges, and opportunities.

It’s worth noting that these styles are not mutually exclusive, and many leaders may use a combination of different styles depending on the situation and context.

The importance of e-leadership styles

e-leadership styles are important in the digital era because they facilitate effective leadership in a virtual environment and promote collaboration and innovation in a remote setting. As technology continues to play an increasingly important role in business operations, e-leadership styles are becoming essential for organizations to succeed.

e-leadership styles are important for several reasons. First, they can help promote employee engagement and motivation in a remote work environment. By providing clear goals and expectations, e-leadership can help employees feel more connected to the organization and understand their role in achieving its objectives. This can help boost employee morale and productivity.

Second, e-leadership styles can help foster a culture of innovation and collaboration. By leveraging technology tools and platforms, e-leadership can facilitate communication and collaboration among employees, teams, and stakeholders. This can help promote the exchange of ideas, enhance problem-solving, and drive innovation in the organization.

Finally, e-leadership styles are important for effective decision-making in the digital age. As organizations collect and process vast amounts of data, e-leadership can help ensure that data is effectively analyzed and used to make informed decisions. This can help organizations stay ahead of the competition and remain agile in an ever-changing business environment.

In conclusion, e-leadership styles are crucial for organizations to succeed in the digital age. By promoting employee engagement, fostering innovation and collaboration, and enhancing decision-making, e-leadership can help organizations adapt to new technologies and thrive in a competitive marketplace.
